The snowstorm over Houston began in the early morning. My girlfriend was still asleep when I awoke around 7am. I got up and looked out the window to see snow falling over Houston. I couldn’t help my excitement, I got dressed fairly quickly and went outside to experience snow. I’ve never been up north so this was my firstime experiencing snow. We’ve seen slight snow before in Houston but this was the first time it was actually snowing and the snow wasn’t melting, it was staying.
The snowed covered everything, like a blank canvas. The cars, the roofs, the trees, the side walk, the street, everything completely covered. It was like a dream I thought I would never get to see in Houston. When I was a child I had watched homealone and my perception of an American christmas was exactly that, christmas lights, santa claus, chimneys and snow. I got to play with the snow for a little bit until a felt the wind picking up and it was like a shock to my nervous system. I realized in that moment no matter how beautiful snow looked like, it wasn’t worth the price of this insane cold.
I go back inside and wait for my girlfriend and her daughter to wake up. The little one wakes and she burtst in joy when I tell her there is snow outside. She talks about Frozen and Elsa and how she wants to build a snowman. Fast forward a wholesome breakfast and we are all outside building a snowman. There wasn’t enough snow to build one of those big ones so a small one had to do. We go back inside and enjoy the rest of the day watching Netflix series, cooking and eating.

I wake up at 4am in the morning to a notification that there was a power outage. By 6am we are freezing, we stay in bed until 9am hoping the electricity would come back on, no luck. We eat cereal for breakfast. We start to make a plan of action as to what we can possibly do under these circumstances. The stove is electric and we can no longer cook. We call our friends and family members just to find out they are undergoing the same situation. We log in to social media and learn that power outages are hitting the entire state of Texas. This is a state of emergency.
1pm – We stop by my parents house to check up on them, their electricity is also gone. Their lights had gone out the day before on Monday at 6am. They tell me they couldn’t sleep because it was so cold and they are planning on leaving with my sister and her boyfriend since they have light at their apartment.
4pm – We get to my best friends house he still has light, thank god. We get to eat some warm soup. 8pm the lights go out, we are back to square one. Aside from that a boil water notice has been sent out. There is also low water pressure. The house is still relatively warm but it won’t stay like that for long.

We wake up throughout the night, its cold and we are worried. We keep thinking about what to do? Luckily the stove is gas, and we can still cook I think to myself. My girlfriend is miserable, we both are. Here we thought we would get to spend a warm night but it is freezing yet again.
We get up from bed around 8:30am, pushing the dread a little further. We don’t want to get out from bed, it is extremely cold and there is no electricity. We eventually get up and join my friend and his family. They’ve made breakfast. I’ts freezing inside but we still have food and that is such a blessing.
10am – Its freezing rain pouring at the moment but I decided to return to my apartment to get all the food in the fridge and bring it over. I drive slow making sure I am watching out for black ice on the road.
10:30am – I get to my apartment and get all the food I have on the fridge and extra clothe. We stop by HEB but to no luck, the lines are long and its raining. Discouraged we return back to my friends house.
1pm – The lights return! I don’t think we have ever been so exicted to have the lights back on! We can warm up now! Or so we all think. For some reason the heater is no longer working.
5pm – AC repairman is here to work on the heater. Its 7pm now but no luck yet.
I will continue to update this post.
